“Maybe you’re thinking of culture as something that’s layered on top of the work: offsites, events, affinity groups and so on. If that’s your focus for building culture, you’re looking at just the tip of the iceberg.”
They say culture eats strategy for breakfast – and there’s no doubt the corporate world has a culture problem. Loneliness and disengagement are rampant: in 2024, 20% of employees reported feeling lonely regularly at work.
But to improve culture, you don’t need more offsites or office time. The solution is surprisingly simple—even boring—and it’s been right under your nose the entire time.
Here’s an excerpt from a longer talk on culture building. The full talk covers much of my communication solution for company culture, including:
- Why we should define connection and collaboration not as activities that happen separately from work, but as experiences that arise organically from the work itself
- How company values can be used to develop behaviors that create culture while also improving outcomes
- How to serve team members at different stages of life with a single connection strategy
